A house fire in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx left one person moderately injured and forced a family from their home on Sunday evening, October 25, 2026. The blaze, reported at 279 Swinton Avenue shortly after 6:30 p.m., prompted a large emergency response involving 141 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) and emergency medical services personnel.

According to News 12, the fire escalated to a second-alarm incident just over 15 minutes after the initial response. Firefighters worked to contain the flames as thick, dark smoke rose above the residential property, drawing the attention of nearby residents.

Fire Spreads Quickly Through Swinton Avenue Home

Emergency crews arrived at the property after receiving reports of a residential fire. Footage captured at the scene showed intense orange flames consuming much of the house, with black smoke billowing into the surrounding neighborhood.

Neighbors described seeing the fire spread rapidly. One resident, Eddy Sosa, told News 12 that he initially noticed what appeared to be a small fire beneath a wooden porch before flames spread to the deck and the side of the house.

The account highlights how quickly a fire can develop around exterior wooden structures and threaten a residential property. However, investigators have not confirmed the precise point of ignition or the cause of the blaze.

As the situation intensified, the FDNY upgraded the incident to a second alarm, bringing additional resources to assist with firefighting and emergency medical operations.

One Person Taken to Hospital

The FDNY reported that one person sustained moderate injuries in the fire and was transported by ambulance to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment.

No additional injuries were confirmed in the initial reports reviewed. Authorities have not publicly identified the injured individual or provided further details about their condition.

The emergency response involved 141 fire and EMS personnel, reflecting the scale of the operation required to control the blaze and protect surrounding properties.

Firefighters brought the fire under control shortly after 7:45 p.m., according to News 12. Their efforts helped bring the immediate emergency to an end, although the property sustained substantial fire damage.

Family Displaced as Community Offers Assistance

Beyond the physical damage, the fire left a family displaced from the home. The American Red Cross subsequently arranged temporary housing and financial assistance for six adults and one child affected by the incident, according to News 12’s follow-up report.

Such assistance can be critical for families who suddenly lose access to their homes and essential belongings following a serious residential fire.

The incident also prompted concern among neighbors who witnessed the flames spread across the property. Their accounts illustrate the distress that residential fires can cause in close-knit communities, particularly when a family must leave its home unexpectedly.

Cause of the Fire Remains Under Investigation

The cause of the October 25 blaze has not been established in the reports reviewed. Investigators are expected to examine the scene to determine where the fire began and what circumstances contributed to its spread.

There is currently no verified evidence establishing whether the fire resulted from an electrical fault, an accident, or another source. Any specific explanation should await confirmation from the appropriate authorities.

A Serious Residential Fire in the Bronx

The Swinton Avenue fire resulted in one reported moderate injury, a significant FDNY response, and the displacement of a family. Although firefighters brought the blaze under control that evening, the incident left residents facing the consequences of substantial property damage.
