Categorized : Uncategorized

The animal rescue community in Canada and beyond is mourning the death of Jesse Adams, co-founder of RainCoast Dog Rescue Society, who died while volunteering to evacuate animals from war-affected communities in Ukraine. Adams dedicated much of his life to protecting vulnerable animals, including abandoned pets and wildlife caught in the devastation of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

His death was reported on October 26, 2026, following an announcement from ROAM, an organization that paid tribute to his commitment and sacrifice. Further details about the circumstances surrounding his death have not been publicly confirmed. His passing has drawn renewed attention to the dangers faced by volunteers working to save animals in active conflict zones.

Jesse Adams’ Cause of Death

As of the latest available reports, the exact cause of Jesse Adams’ death has not been officially disclosed. Although he was working in a dangerous region of Ukraine, available reporting has not established whether his death resulted from shelling, a drone strike, an accident, or another cause.

Adams had previously spoken openly about the risks involved in frontline animal rescue, including the constant threat of missiles, artillery and drones. His work frequently took him into communities where residents and their animals faced serious danger.

Until further information is released by his organization, family or relevant authorities, specific claims about how he died should be treated as unconfirmed.

Co-Founder of RainCoast Dog Rescue Society

Adams co-founded RainCoast Dog Rescue Society in 2014. Based in British Columbia, the registered Canadian charity works to rescue and rehabilitate neglected, abandoned, abused and stray dogs and cats.

Through the organization, Adams helped build a network of volunteers committed to improving animal welfare. His work extended beyond Canada, reflecting his belief that animals deserved protection regardless of where they lived or the circumstances they faced.

His Dangerous Mission in Ukraine

Adams first travelled to the Ukraine-Romania border in April 2022, shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion. He joined an international coalition providing veterinary care, vaccinations, medication, food and essential supplies to animals accompanying Ukrainian refugees.

During a later mission, he helped evacuate nine African lions from an endangered zoo in Odesa. The animals were transported through Moldova and Romania before eventually reaching a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa.

In 2026, Adams returned to Ukraine for another rescue mission, working alongside Animal Rescue Kharkiv in the Donbas region. He and fellow volunteers carried out approximately five missions each week, rescuing between 30 and 60 animals per operation. Adams estimated that the team had helped between 700 and 1,000 animals during the first three months of that deployment.

Remembering His Compassion and Legacy

Adams’ work involved more than rescuing dogs and cats. His team also helped animals including goats, hedgehogs, turtles, chinchillas and a raccoon dog rescued from a damaged zoo.

His Ukrainian heritage, military background and lifelong love of animals helped shape his commitment to returning to the country despite the dangers.

His death leaves a significant loss for his colleagues and the animal welfare community. His legacy lives on through the animals he helped save, the volunteers he worked alongside and the rescue efforts he helped establish.

As tributes continue, Jesse Adams will be remembered for putting compassion into action and extending help to vulnerable animals when they needed it most.
