Mbana served as the DA’s caucus leader in the Metsimaholo Local Municipality and was the party’s Ward 14 candidate. He was recognised for his involvement in local politics and his commitment to representing residents and strengthening community structures. His death has prompted renewed concern about the safety of public representatives during an already tense election period.
Thulani Mbana’s Cause of Death
Thulani Mbana died from multiple gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting at his residence in Taylor Park, Zamdela. According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m. when two unidentified men approached his home and called out to him.
When Mbana came outside, one of the suspects allegedly produced a firearm and shot him several times at close range. The assailants reportedly fled on foot, and Mbana died at the scene.
South African Police Service investigators have opened a murder case and are working to identify and apprehend the suspects. As of October 27, authorities had not established a motive for the killing. Police had also not confirmed whether the attack was politically motivated.
A Dedicated Democratic Alliance Leader
Mbana joined the Democratic Alliance in 2017 and became actively involved in political organising and community service. Over the years, he contributed to the party’s grassroots structures and participated in election campaigns and by-elections.
His responsibilities extended beyond party activities. He served as a councillor in Metsimaholo and previously held a position on the mayoral committee responsible for spatial planning and human settlements when the DA was in government in the municipality.
As caucus leader, Mbana helped represent the party in municipal affairs and worked to ensure residents’ concerns were heard. His colleagues described his passing as a devastating loss for both the organisation and the community he served.
Police Investigation Underway
Following the shooting, Free State Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia activated the Zamdela Trio Task Team and the Serious Organised Crime Unit to investigate the murder.
Investigators are pursuing leads to establish what happened and locate the two suspects. Police have urged members of the public with relevant information to assist the investigation and cautioned against circulating unverified claims on social media.
The timing of the killing, shortly before the local government elections scheduled for November 4, has raised questions about political safety. However, authorities have stressed that the motive remains unknown, and no political connection has been officially established.
Tributes and Community Remembrance
Messages of condolences have emerged from friends, colleagues, and community members following news of Mbana’s death. Fellow politicians have also expressed sympathy for his wife, family, friends, and colleagues.
The Freedom Front Plus, which worked alongside Mbana in the Metsimaholo municipality despite political differences, remembered him as friendly and approachable. The party called for a thorough investigation and urged authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
A Loss Ahead of Election Day
Thulani Mbana’s death has left a painful void in the Metsimaholo political community. His years of political involvement and municipal service formed an important part of his public life.
As the investigation continues, his family and colleagues face the difficult task of mourning a man whose life was cut short in a violent attack. His legacy will be remembered through his service to the community and his commitment to public representation.
