Authorities identified the suspect as Kenneth Rickenbacher. He appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Monday, October 26, and was ordered held without bail as the case proceeds.
What Happened at Kingsborough Houses?
According to police and prosecutors cited in local media reports, the incident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday inside an apartment at 108 Kingsborough Walk.
Investigators allege that Rickenbacher became involved in an argument with the 38-year-old woman before threatening her and their child with a knife. Prosecutors said he allegedly poured rubbing alcohol on the woman and set her on fire.
Responding officers arrived to find smoke coming from the apartment and heard the victim screaming. Inside, they discovered fire damage to a mattress and found the woman suffering from extensive burns.
Emergency medical personnel transported her to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan for specialized treatment. Early reports described her condition as stable, but subsequent coverage said she had been placed in a medically induced coma while receiving treatment for severe burns to her face, shoulders, back and hands. Her pregnancy was also reported by local news outlets.
The conflicting medical updates highlight the seriousness of her injuries. Authorities have not publicly provided a comprehensive medical update confirming her latest condition.
Suspect Faces Multiple Criminal Charges
Rickenbacher faces charges including attempted murder, assault, arson, criminal mischief and acting in a manner injurious to a child under 17. Reports from the court proceedings specify three counts of assault and two counts of arson.
Prosecutors said the couple’s 11-year-old child witnessed the alleged attack and was threatened with harm if the child disclosed what happened. The judge issued orders of protection barring Rickenbacher from contacting the protected individuals.
Rickenbacher appeared in court with visible bandages on his head and hands. According to reporting on the proceedings, he gave police a different account, claiming the fire was accidental and occurred during a confrontation. Those claims have not changed the charges filed against him, and the allegations remain subject to the legal process.
Previous Criminal History Draws Attention
The case has also brought renewed attention to Rickenbacher’s criminal history. News reports state that he was previously sentenced to nine years in prison following a 2015 incident involving a firearm and the same woman and their infant daughter. He also has a prior drug conviction from Suffolk County dating to 2007.
The earlier case is part of the background reported by local media, but the current charges must be determined through the courts.
Investigation and Court Proceedings Continue
The alleged attack has shaken residents and raised concerns about the safety of families experiencing domestic violence. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the victim receives medical care.
Rickenbacher remains in custody following the court appearance and is expected to return to court for further proceedings. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The immediate focus remains on the woman’s recovery and the welfare of the child who allegedly witnessed the violence.
